It can be hard to know where to stay in Tokyo, especially if you’re only visiting for the first time. There’s just too many places to pick out from, and it’s hard to judge them based on just what you read online. We understand it well!
Good thing is that we at Howzit Japan have local-approved recommendations. Here are some of the best places to stay in Tokyo for your trip. Read on!
Ueno
First on the list is the district of Ueno. It sits on an intersection of several of the busiest train lines in Tokyo, like the Joban Line, Ginza Line, the Tohoku Shinkansen, and the ever-important Yamanote Line, among so many others.
With all these major train lines passing through, Ueno is just one or two train rides away from literally anywhere in the city–and even outside it via the world-famous Shinkansen. Aside from that, the Narita Skyliner train line and the Keisei Main Line also ends at Ueno Station straight from Narita Airport.
Also, the hotels and inns in Ueno are also quite more affordable than those in Tokyo center. They’re also a bit less touristy, which is likely what makes their prices reasonable. Lastly, Ueno also offers a great mix of drinking spots, excellent streetfood, and the serenity of Ueno Park.
So if you’re deciding where to stay in Tokyo, Ueno should be at the top of your list!
Shinjuku
Now, Shinjuku can be a bit more “tourist trappy” compared to Ueno. But there are several reasons why we included it in this list! Mostly, it’s because it has the best nightlife spots that Tokyo has to offer.
Deciding where to stay in Tokyo depends on what you want to see and do around the city. So if you’re looking for great drinks and a great time, Shinjuku is another excellent spot. There’s the Kabukicho red light district, as well as Omoide Yokocho and the famed Golden Gai to choose from!
Now, you just need to be careful around potential bar scams in this area of the city. But if you’re vigilant enough and know how to politely say no, you will have a wonderful time staying in Shinjuku–guaranteed.
Akihabara
This one is for all our geek friends out there! If you want to know where to stay in Tokyo to be close to everything anime, gamer, and geeky, then Akihabara is the place to be. Bar none.
Just like Ueno, Akihabara sits at the intersection of a lot of major Tokyo train lines. So not only will you be right at the center of otaku fandom, but you’re also just a few trains away from everywhere else.
To cap things off, Akihabara also offers a wide range of restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines. There’s also the world-famous maid cafes that have to be seen to be believed, if you’re into that sort of thing!
Ebisu
Another great nightlife spot, Ebisu is famous for its beers and bars that serve different kinds of it! Howzit Japan founder Kota recommends trying craft beers here to see what it’s all about.
Ebisu is also quite close to high-end areas like Omotesando and Shibuya, so you’re never too far away from all the trendy action. But mostly, Ebisu is a quiet place that is perfect for a laid-back kind of trip.
