Japan Fall Season: When Will Autumn Colors in Japan Appear?

Autumn colors in Japan are as much of a crowd-drawer as cherry blossoms in spring. It is perhaps the biggest reason why visitors are flocking to the country ever more as Fall season draws near. But when will they appear this year?

This question, along with a few more updates on Japan entering Autumn season will be discussed here. So read on!

Autumn Colors in Japan are Delayed!

First things first, autumn colors in Japan are delayed this year. Yes, you read that right. It is a bit unfortunate for those whose trips won’t align, but that’s life. Either way, autumn leaves are not going to pop in Japan until early to late November and as far as early December, as per the Japan Meteorological Corporation

The main reason for this is the immense heat. Japan has had one of its hottest summers ever and it’s directly affecting when Fall leaves appear. Here’s a quick breakdown of the projected schedule for autumn colors in Japan:

  • Hokkaido: November 8
  • Sendai: November 27
  • Tokyo: December 1
  • Nagoya: December 3
  • Osaka: December 4
  • Fukuoka: December 10

For those who unfortunately have their trips in early September to October, you’re out of luck. But then again, cherry blossoms were late this year, too. However, don’t feel too bad! This is just the first forecast, as JMC will release an updated forecast in early October. So stay tuned!

Suica Cards are FINALLY Back!

Due to the massive chip shortage that affected the world, Japan had to stop selling Suica cards to tourists for a while. But just in time for autumn, they’re finally back on sale (alongside Pasmo).

For your upcoming trip to Japan, a Suica card is going to be your one-way ticket to almost anything. You can ride trains, buses, and even pay for your shopping using just this one reloadable card. The same goes for Pasmo.

However, only registered Suica cards are available for now. What this means is that you’ll need to provide personal information when you buy one. While this may sound iffy, it’s going to make it easier to find your card when you lose it.

No More Street Drinking at Night in Shibuya Ahead of Halloween

Japan’s biggest and rowdiest Halloween celebration is almost always in iconic Shibuya. Things can get extremely busy there at this time of year, and perhaps even a little dangerous if you’re not careful. So make sure you plan ahead!

With thousands of people in costumes getting all amped up, Shibuya authorities have implemented a street drinking ban at night. So if you plan to have a couple of drinks while out and about with your friends at the Scramble Crossing during the Halloween festivities, keep this in mind.
